A renovation can be a trying time for both a homeowner and a contractor. Everyone involved has a stake in the success of the final project. Given the exposure put on under-performing contractors in the media, renovators and contractors alike already have an uphill battle when trying to forge a relationship with a new client. Contractors who use RENOMii to communicate change orders to their homeowners have an easier time overcoming those negative perceptions through the interactive transparency our app provides. We spoke with RENOMii user Duane Erb, owner of Duane Erb Construction and asked him a few questions about his experiences in the renovation industry and what he loves about being a contractor. Here is what he had to say:
How did Duane Erb Construction begin?
In 1992, after working for another contractor for 25 years, I decided to take on the challenge of striking out on my own to begin Duane Erb Construction. Our original logo (pictured below) was designed by a family member on a napkin while sharing dinner in a restaurant! So, with a dream and a logo and three good men, we were off and building.
What does the start of your day look like at Duane Erb Construction?
My day starts early, beginning with sharing a breakfast smoothie with my wife. Then I am off to the office to meet with my employees before they head out to their job sites.
What attracted you to being a contractor?
I grew up watching and helping my father work with wood. I discovered then that I really enjoyed working with my hands, creating what I had envisioned. Spending 25 years in the construction industry made me realize that, as a contractor, I would be able to help people turn their dreams into reality.
What is your favourite thing about being a contractor?
I gain great satisfaction from a project well done, on time, and on budget…knowing that our clients dreams have been realized.
What is your favourite type of renovation to complete and why?
I really enjoy designing additions on older homes. I love the challenge of seamlessly combining the new with the old by using innovative, sustainable materials for a lifetime of enjoyment by our clients.
If you could renovate anything right now in your own home, what would it be and why?
To the delight of my wife, I would add a large great room to our home. It would have large windows to let in natural light and would overlook our gardens and bird feeders. Most importantly, it would be a gathering place for our children, grandchildren and friends to share meals, laughter and friendship.
What advice would you give homeowners to help their renovation go as smooth as possible?
1) Trust our expertise and years of experience to guide your project to a high standard of completion.
2) Frequent, open communication is key to helping the project progress smoothly.
If you weren’t doing renovations, what would you be doing?
I would still spend time working with my hands to create designs I envision through landscaping, gardening, and wood carving… and the rest of the time I would be volunteering, traveling with my wife and, of course, spending time at the cottage and fishing with my 4 children and their spouses, and our 4 grandchildren.
